This is one of the Electrical Solution first questions you are asked when preparing to buy an electric Solution for your home: where will you service it? The vast majority of owners opt for home charging: simple, practical and economical. A minority prefer to refuel at public terminals or at their workplace: a sometimes advantageous choice if the latter offer free recharging.
Check its Electrical Solution installation
If you want to charge at home or in your private parking lot, you must first find out about the configuration of your electrical network. It must be properly sized, wired and protected to ensure safe charging. Some cars also refuse to start charging when they detect an anomaly on the network. Indeed, when plugged in, an electric vehicle consumes a large amount of energy for many hours.
Most models can charge 2.3 kW (the equivalent of a dryer) for 20 to 30 hours straight on a conventional outlet. On a dedicated terminal, the power can reach 7 to 22 kW (the equivalent of about twenty microwave ovens) for recharging in 3 to 10 hours. The ideal is to call an electrician to check its installation, but this can be enough if you have good knowledge in the field.
In collective housing
From individual houses to collective housing, the Electrical Solution differ. Indeed, if you are completely free to install the outlet or terminal of your choice in individual housing, the process is a little more complex in co-ownership. In a building parking lot, you must first obtain the agreement of the co-ownership syndicate or the lessor. This can be a long process since it takes a period of six months to purge any opposition ( read our file on co-ownership recharging ). The terminal must also incorporate an electricity meter in order to pass the invoice to the user. To avoid the headache, several companies offer turnkey packages and take care of the procedures up to the commissioning of the terminal through energy billing.
Although it is illegal, some users still charge their electric car on an outlet in their parking lot, without any agreement. If detected, the act will provoke the ire of the co-owners who then pay the electricity bill in their charges. It is, therefore, better to carry out the installation in the rules of the art, especially as subsidies are provided to finance it up to 50% of its price within the limit of 1300 € HT (1660 € HT if the terminal is with a load control system). In individual accommodation
If you are in this type of accommodation, blow! There is no other limit than your personal budget. In your home, you can install the terminal of your choice at the location of your choice. The least expensive Solution is to plug your electric car into a standard outlet, having however taken care to check that your electrical network can support the charge for very long hours. On such an outlet, the power will not exceed 2.3 kW. It is quite sufficient to recharge overnight enough to make your daily journey, up to 150 km round trip ( see our online recharge time simulator ).
If you want to recharge a little faster without breaking the bank, you can buy a reinforced Legrand Green’Up socket. Identical in style to an outdoor garden socket, it allows the power to be increased to 3.2 kW. Either enough to recover about 200 km of autonomy in ten hours. This equipment costs around 60 euros alone or 130 euros in a kit including a differential circuit breaker. It must be installed by an electrician or a person very competent in electrical matters.
Household Electrical Solution stations
Even if you call on a professional, and if you have a larger budget, you can finally get a “wall box”: a domestic charging station. Costing from 500 to 1500 euros, it can charge from 7 to 22 kW provided that the electrical installation is correctly sized. It is the fastest and most flexible Electrical Solution for charging an electric car at home. There is a very wide range of products offering various options such as power adjustment, remote control, recording of consumption data and consultation via an integrated screen, locking and access control.
Program your recharge to save
Whether you choose a conventional charging station or socket, don’t forget to plan the charging times for your electric car. If you have a peak / off-peak electricity subscription, it is more economical to charge overnight during the low-rate slot communicated by your supplier. This saves several hundred euros per year depending on your recharging needs. The majority of electric vehicles offer to program recharging via the on-board computer. Otherwise, on a conventional outlet, a simple automatic time switch is enough like the one you may already have for your hot water tank. Some terminals also offer a steering function.
Finally, you may need to purchase a specific charging cable if it is not supplied with the car. Often, the manufacturer delivers two cables: one allowing to charge on a traditional catch and the other on the terminals via the connector type 2. Count approximately 200 to 500 euros if necessary, for example on certain sales of vehicles of opportunity.
